The ACE Reopens to Support Students by: Joy Lilayon Katete

Hardin-Simmons University (HSU) welcomed back the Academic Center for Enrichment (ACE) this semester after its summer break, giving students a central space for academic support and tutoring. The ACE provides free opportunities for students to meet one-on-one with peer tutors who are recommended by faculty and trained to assist in a variety of courses.

“The ACE/ Writing Center offers free of charge opportunities for students to work one-on-one with academically experienced, trained, peer tutors to enrich their understanding and application of the concepts they are learning in the classroom.” Dr. Carol Krueger, director of Disability Services and ACE, said. “The ACE helps students gain confidence in their academic skills.”

The program is internationally certified through the College Reading and Learning Association, and ACE tutors complete 10 hours of training before beginning their work. Bringing academic support systems together in one location creates an efficient, student-centered experience designed to encourage both persistence and success at HSU.

“The goals for the Academic Center for Enrichment remain to support HSU retention and persistence through an efficient tutoring experience,” Krueger said.

When students visit ACE, they are welcomed and matched with a peer tutor who is experienced in their specific subject. Looking ahead, the center plans to increase the number of tutors available during open hours and expand in-class tutoring options.

“Opening the ACE each semester is an exciting time for myself and the ACEs,” Krueger said. “It is great to know that students will be able to receive the academic support they need to build confidence in their academic abilities.”

For many, walking into ACE for the first time can feel intimidating. Krueger emphasized that creating a safe and encouraging environment is key to helping students feel comfortable.

“Students can be very nervous coming to ACE for the first time,” Krueger said. “We hope to create an atmosphere allowing students to be assured that they are in a comfortable, safe space to provide the most productive atmosphere for learning.”

She also offered encouragement to those still hesitant.

“I always say the ACE is the place to be on campus.” Krueger said. “Good things happen there. Students develop ownership of their own education. The ACEs are ready and willing to serve the students of Hardin-Simmons University.”
