The Good News Buckaroos is a student organization entering its second year at Hardin-Simmons University. The group uses theatre and improv to share Bible stories with younger audiences.

“We are a traveling group of Jesus-loving cowboys,” said Logan Hughes, a junior of Lewisville. “[We] like sharing dramatized Bible stories to children in the Abilene area.”

Hughes co-founded the club with Whitni Flowers, a sophomore of Marble Falls.

“We can kind of consider ourselves an improv club,” Flowers said. The group develops Bible stories into fun skits to share the good news of the gospel.

The club has held two performances so far, at Abilene Classical Academy and HSU's own Western Heritage Day, where members performed the story of David and Goliath.

“The story of David and Goliath is kind of our main script and story that we’ve really been developing,” Flowers said. “But the original idea through all of this was to do parables. Which we are.”

The organization is looking to perform for more audiences.

“The hope is … that we can get to a point where we’re well known enough and we’re able to work with public places to perform at public venues,” Hughes said.

Additionally, members are looking to add more scripts to their lineup. Flowers said they are exploring more parables and new ideas for a gospel story centered on Jesus.

“I have very big, big hopes in mind,” Hughes said. “However, we did brand ourselves as the Good News Buckaroos because we wanted some type of like Western theme because we wanted to be … just baked into the university.”

Flowers added, “I really see that it can create, and it already has been creating, a good community for HSU students, as well as putting HSU students more into the community.”
