From Spring Chickens to Seasoned Hens - HSU Fried Chicken Favorites.By: Kaitlyn Beutel

There are many fried chicken places around Abilene that local college students enjoy.

From Canes, Chicken Express, Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s and Popeyes, just to name a few, the students at Hardin-Simmons University have a wide variety of options to curb their chicken cravings With fried chicken being near to many students’ hearts, the staff of The Brand decided to survey a sample of students here at the University to see what their favorite fried chicken places are.

While the students were presented with many delicious options to choose from, there was an overwhelmingly large majority vote as 69 percent of the students surveyed chose Chick-fil-A as their favorite. The rest of the options were tied rather closely as 12 percent chose Canes and Chicken Express, and eight percent chose Popeyes, while no students surveyed chose McDonald’s as their favorite.

“Chick-fil-A is my favorite chicken place right now because my mom got me a bunch of gift cards for Christmas, and I love free food,” Megan Jewell, a freshman christian studies major from Alexandria, La., said. “But also I genuinely really enjoy Chick-fil-A and go there a lot after softball practices. Also, their milkshakes and cookies are so awesome and make great treats.”

Emma Owens is a freshman biology major from Austin. Owens is also a fan of Chick-fil-A but for a different reason. “I don’t know why Chick-fil-A is my favorite, it just brings back good memories and it tastes really good,” Owens said.

While Chick-fil-A is well-loved on campus, Canes is still appreciated by students. “I love Canes, from the juicy chicken that falls apart in my mouth, the sweet tangy canes sauce, bread that makes my mouth water, and the salty fries that alway taste phenomenal,” Keeley Gallagher, a freshman nursing major from Frisco, said. “The business itself is well run, the food is served in a timely manner and the fryers are cleaned twice a day. I appreciate the nice customer service, and the polite workers. The only downside to Canes is the price. It costs $10 for four pieces of chicken, a few fries and one piece of toast. So feeding a lot of people without breaking the bank is not possible.”

While there are many different opinions on the best places, there is one thing that many of the students can agree on: fried chicken is a yummy meal no matter where it comes from.
