Greek Life & Rush By: Emily Slaughter

Greek Life has kicked off rush season for potential new members to join sororities and fraternities this fall semester at Hardin Simmons University (HSU). There are five social clubs HSU offers that are a part of Greek life: Triphi (Sorority), Kappa (Fraternity), Delta (Sorority), Alpha Iota Omega (Sorority) and ZOO (Fraternity).

At HSU, Greek Life is different from how it is at D1 universities. Trinity Epley, a freshman in biology/ kinesiology, expressed how she feels about this difference stating, “From attending Rush events and getting to know Greek Life, I have noticed how warm, welcoming and community based everyone is involved with Greek life at HSU.” Epley said. “At bigger universities sometimes that isn’t the case and can act colder and more closed off.”

Greek life at HSU is more than joining a club; you are joining a family and community who will support you during this college season.

Greek Life presidents expressed how they felt joining their clubs:

“Since joining Delta, I felt an immediate sense of belonging.” Helen Fernandez, president of Delta and a junior exercise science, said. “The girls were so fun, welcoming, and genuine that I knew right away that Delta was the place for me. That moment showed me how much community and support there is within the organization.”

“For me, it was hard making friends during my freshman year, so that's what sparked my initial interest in Greek Life at HSU.” Michelle Ramos, president of AIO and senior elementary education major, said. “My wrangler during Stampede week was a former president of AIO, but she still encouraged me to go to other clubs' rush events and dig my hands into Greek Life at HSU. Ultimately though, I found I had the time of my life when I was with the AIO members and even though our numbers have dwindled over the years, I think it was a blessing in disguise as we all became strongly enmeshed in each other's lives and it allowed us to find best friends in all of our members.”

“Kappa was there for me when I was first getting my bearings on campus and their passion for the Lord and pursuit of the freshmen in need is what really drew me in.” Jackson Dyer, president of Kappa and senior worship leadership major, said. “Kappa guys know how to treat each other with love, kindness, trust, and accountability while still creating forever memories and inside jokes for the ages. My favorite memories involving Kappa are probably the ones where we just band together for some pure fellowship together.”

Please check out these amazing clubs and opportunities they are offering if you are interested in rushing this season.
