Hardin-Simmons University has a history of remarkable alumni who go on to accomplish great things. M. Lynn Taylor, author of I Wish I Thought of That Before, is an HSU alum who also served as editor of The HSU Brand from 1967-1968.
During this year’s homecoming weekend, The Brand will be hosting a book-signing event where both Taylor and his wife, Terri, will be present.
“[I Wish I Thought of That Before] describes [Taylor’s] Abilene Childhood, his time as a reporter and the editor of The Brand in 67 and 68,” Taylor’s wife, Terri, said. “It is about loss and finding new love and hope after loss. Lynn had a long career as a lawyer, working for the University of Texas system, as an assistant attorney general and in private practice.”
Taylor shares a multitude of different personal experiences in his book. However, this book was not written with the intention of eventually becoming published. He recounts his struggles with mental health and depression in I Wish I Thought of That Before. This is definitely a must-read for anyone who has faced similar struggles.
“It was a terrible time, and to deal with that I would get on the computer and start writing,” Taylor said. “It was never my intention to write a memoir or write a book. It was something I did to stay alive.”
While there are some very difficult experiences that Taylor includes in his book, there are also some very lighthearted moments as well. “One of the things that has been a salvation to me is that I do not take myself too seriously. I can make people laugh, and I can make people cry… that’s a great gift,” Taylor said.
The book signing event will be hosted in The HSU Brand office, located in room 224 of the Skiles Social Sciences Building, from 2-3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct.14. This will be an opportunity to meet and visit with both Taylor and his wife, Terri. It is evident that Taylor has a great deal of wisdom, insight and experiences to share, so this event is also an opportunity to learn from an alum whom you might have more in common with than you think. The Brand staff cannot wait to start off the homecoming weekend with this special event.
