Rush is Almost Here By: Madi B
Greek life is a big part of the college experience and Hardin-Simmons University (HSU) has four clubs that will begin the rush process soon.
Rush is when students have the opportunity to meet current club members and participate in many different activities on and off campus. Rush used to be a hazing process, but HSU clubs use this time to truly get to know the new students on campus. While rush is an enjoyable way to meet upperclassmen it can also be quite time consuming as rushees are encouraged to attend all of the rush functions put on by the organization's officers.
After two weeks of rush (Oct. 19- Nov. 3) students then have preference dinners with the club of their choice and bid day when they officially decide what club they want to join. Then the rushees become a pledge and start to understand what the club they chose is really about and how to become a participating member. Pledging at HSU will take place from Nov. 9- Nov. 20.
There are two women's clubs at HSU. Delta, which is known for their kind hearts and loving spirits, and Tri Phi, who are known for their elegant style and leadership skills. The men’s clubs are Kappa Phi Omega (Kappa) and Zeta Omega Phi (Zoo). Kappa is known for their outgoing and unique personalities, while Zoo members are known for their confidence and reservedness. All four clubs will begin rushing on Oct. 19, and have many fun activities planned for their rush periods. Most rush events will be happening in the afternoon and evening to allow students time to get class work done before having some off time.
When asked why rushing is important, Delta member Kylie Browning, a sophomore psychology major from Abilene, said, “Rush is important because it helps build a social community. It builds friendships and a sense of belonging. It also gives you service and campus involvement opportunities while allowing you to experience the traditions of Greek life.” HSU Greek life is a great way to connect to peers and the community in Abilene. Do not miss this chance to rush a student organization at HSU.
