SABERS: Gilbert’s Birthday Extravaganza

Today from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., Hardin-Simmons University's (HSU) Student Activities Board (SABERS) will be hosting Gilbert’s annual birthday party.  The party will be held on Anderson Lawn.

Gilbert the Goose was originally brought to the HSU campus in 2013 by a group of freshman boys residing in Ferguson Hall.  What began as a lighthearted joke grew into a lasting campus tradition.  The original Gilbert’s home was the Abilene Zoo, but he now resides permanently on the HSU campus.  Since his arrival on campus, Gilbert has become a symbol of community.  His annual birthday celebration serves as an opportunity to bring the University together while highlighting what makes HSU unique.

Students and staff are welcome to attend the birthday celebration.  Students were given a formal invitation to attend Gilbert’s party in their HSU student mailbox.  Additionally, an email was distributed to all HSU students regarding additional information surrounding the event.

Comfort Color t-shirt orders for Gilbert’s annual birthday shirt were due April 8 by noon.  All individuals who purchased a shirt are highly encouraged to wear it to celebrate Gilbert on his special day.

This year, Gilbert’s party features many fun and engaging activities and foods for everyone to enjoy.

Pizza and burger food trucks will be available.  The first 100 students in attendance will receive a free piece of pizza or burger.  Gelu Italian Ice will be available in a wide assortment of flavor creations, ensuring there is something for everyone.

This year’s party features a dunk tank, giving attendees a fun and interactive way to engage in the birthday festivities.

Gilbert-themed craft tables will be set up for all attendees, providing an opportunity to create keepsakes in remembrance of Gilbert’s 2026 birthday.

As one of the largest events of the semester, Gilbert’s birthday is always highly  anticipated by many HSU students.  Following Gilbert’s disappearance in late March 2026, this year’s celebration carries additional significance as the campus welcomes him back.  Each April, HSU’s campus comes together to celebrate their beloved unofficial mascot, Gilbert the Goose.
