Wait Until Dark Review By: Madison Bratton
Wait Until Dark was performed on the Down Center Stage (DCS) of Van Ellis Theatre at Hardin-Simmons University (HSU) on Sept. 24 -27.
It was directed by Mackenzie Marshall, a senior theatre education major from Pilot Point. This show, however, had limited seating available. With that being said, it sold out on two out of the four shows it held.
This show had a very entertaining plot and had the entire crowd laughing in their seats. It was about a blind girl in her apartment as a group of men try to mislead her into giving up a doll that is somewhere in her house. It is full of suspense, murder and intrigue. It was not only funny but suspenseful keeping audiences on their toes throughout the entire play.
Susan Hendricks was played by Sam Strawn, a senior musical theatre major from San Antonio. Strawn did a fantastic job at making her character believably blind, and the set allowed for her to safely execute blocking without accidentally injuring herself. On the topic of the set, this story is set in a basement apartment, and the set crew made the space look and feel exactly like that. It was easy to tell that lots of time and effort was put into all of the set pieces, as each one had a purpose and was not randomly chosen.
Along with a talented cast of students, almost the entire production was put on by students, having a student crew and a student director. They put on a marvelous version of Wait Until Dark that clearly indicates the commitment to their craft when you realize how much hard work went into getting this show audience-ready in just four weeks.
After seeing this performance, HSU staff, students, and visitors cannot wait to see what else the theatre department has in the works for the rest of the semester.
