We Are Hiring! By: Brylie Myers

Updated: Sep 19, 2025

Are you looking for a job that works with your class schedule, helps you gain real-world experience and helps keep you connected with on-campus events?

Hardin-Simmons University’s (HSU) student newspaper, The Brand, is hiring. With over 20 years of experience working with Texas newspapers and media companies as a reporter, publisher and editor, Carlina Daugherty, advisor to The Brand, and adjunct professor of communications, now helps students at HSU share stories that matter most to our community.

So, what kinds of roles is The Brand hiring for? They are hiring reporters, photographers, social media, audio, video and even email marketing.

“You don’t need any prior experience to apply,” Daugherty said. “The whole point of joining The Brand is to learn. We’ll help you build skills, create a portfolio and get to know your campus in a whole new way. A lot of our staff aren’t even media majors– they just enjoy storytelling and connecting with the HSU community.”

She also knows from personal experience how life-changing working in student media can be. During her undergraduate years, she spent four years working with her college newspaper, where she built lifelong friendships and developed skills that helped her land two big internships and her first daily newspaper job. “The clips I created in student media showed I could write, edit, interview and work on deadline, and that opened the door to my career,” Daugherty said.

When it comes to advising the paper, Daugherty’s favorite part is working alongside students. “Every assignment is approached so differently depending on who’s working on it,” Daugherty said. “That variety is inspiring. It’s a creative, collaborative process, and we have fun along the way.”

Looking ahead, The Brand is expanding into multimedia storytelling including video, social media, newsletters and even a podcast, giving students the chance to gain real-world experience using tools employers value. For Daugherty, the newspaper is more than just a job opportunity, it is a chance to make connections, gain confidence and discover new strengths. “Don’t overthink it, just try it,” Daugherty said, “If you’re curious and willing to jump in, you’ll gain a lot, both personally and professionally.”
