Yell Practice by: Delani Bauer

You can yell along with the Hardin-Simmons University Cheerleaders at yell practice on Nov. 8, beginning at 6:50 p.m.

The cheerleaders will teach the crowd cheers and chants.  Each cheer and chant will be broken down slowly and in a way everyone is able to learn.  Attendees will learn both the chant’s motions and words. The HSU annual event will take place on the front porch of Moody Center.

Event organizers say the event will help the HSU student  fan section by preparing them to yell along with the cheerleaders on game day.  When the cheerleaders begin a chant, the crowd will now be able to join in with them. All HSU students are invited to attend yell practice.  It is an interactive way to get involved with and grow the HSU spirit.

“My favorite thing about last year’s yell practice was feeling the game day excitement and seeing students coming together to support our athletic programs,” said Karli Bauer, sophomore art major from Mason. “It was really fun knowing the cheers for game day, and it really helped me get more involved with the game.”

Cheerleader Faith Ackley, sophomore early education major from Rowlett and a HSU cheerleader said she enjoys the interaction with those who attend.  “My favorite part about yell practice is seeing the campus get involved,” she said.

Following yell practice, students will be given free HSU T-shirts on a first-come-first-served basis.

The Cowboys remain undefeated in their season. Cheerleaders said it is important for the HSU campus to show their support, and the purpose of yell practice is to prepare students to cheer for the home team as they play the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

On Nov. 9, the HSU Cowboy football team plays UMHB. The game takes place at HSU’s Shelton Stadium with a set kick-off time of 1 p.m.

The Cowboys played UMHB in their fifth game of the season on Oct. 12.  The  final score was 44-21 with HSU coming out on top.

HSU’s basketball season is fast approaching with the first home games beginning in early November.  The cheers learned at yell practice translate to both football and basketball games.  Yell practice ensures that the HSU student section is always reflecting school spirit at every sporting event.
