Bid Day & Pledging By: Emily Slaughter

Rush season has ended at Hardin Simmons University and Greek life is about to start welcoming new potential members into their clubs: Tri Phi (Sorority), Kappa (Fraternity), Delta (Sorority), Alpha Iota Omega (Sorority) and ZOO (Fraternity).

The process to become a potential member in one of these clubs includes attending rush events, getting bids from clubs to join and pledging into a desired club. Receiving a bid from the clubs consists of attending the mandatory pref dinner which shows the club you are interested in becoming a member. Before receiving a bid, you must complete the online training that was sent out in the beginning of the semester.

Once bid day arrives, you will pick up your bid upstairs in Moody and head to be welcomed and celebrated by the club members.

“Reveal day reminded me that family isn’t just who you’re born with, it's who you find in your sorority.” Zadie Crist, a junior exercise science major from Lorena and vice president of Tri Phi, said. Entering college can be very difficult and a rough transition from high school, especially if you moved away from your family. Joining Greek life makes you feel like you have a family on campus who is supporting you and has your back.

After bid day, you pledge into the club by learning the history, current members and traditions. Each club pledges new members differently, but they all have the same goal of getting to know their new members and growing either as a brotherhood or sisterhood. Pledges are assigned “Bigs” who are current members that will support and mentor them during the pledging process in Greek life.

Pledging usually lasts two weeks and on the very last day you get pinned in and officially considered a member of the club. Even though the clubs can make you do funny or crazy things during pledging, God calls us to dwell in community and fellowship with one another.

Hebrews 10:24-25 states: "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another.”

Remember to collect your Bid on Oct. 24 at 12 p.m. on the second floor of Moody.
