The Hardin-Simmons University Cowgirl softball team opened their season on Tuesday, Feb. 4 with a double header versus Schreiner University. The Cowgirls won both games, four to three and 12 to eight, respectively.

Heading into the seventh inning during the first game, the Cowgirls were down three to one until they scored four runs to take the lead and win the first game.

Kate Tovar, a sophomore on the team, described how the games went. “I feel like the first two games against Schreiner went well. There are a few things that we can improve on and get better on for future games,” Tovar said.

Sidney Cox, a sophomore outfielder, explained further. “The first game started slow; our defense was doing great, but we couldn’t produce on offense. The second game, we came out with confidence and power and just hit the ball hard,” Cox said.

Tovar shared what her favorite part of the games were versus Schreiner. “My favorite part of the game was in the top of the seventh when Peyton Newman [sophomore, first baseman] came up and hit a three run homerun to tie the game. It got everybody hyped up and we kept the rally going. Then ended up winning four to three after being down the whole game,” Tovar said.

Cox explained what the team’s goal is for this season. “I’d say one of our biggest goals is to win more than 35 games. By doing that, it puts us in a good position to win conference, maybe get a bid or at least get noticed by the committee,” Cox said.

Tovar agreed about the team’s goal for the season. “As a team our goal is to make it to postseason and win the conference tournament,” Tovar said.

The Cowgirls will play at home on Friday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 22 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. versus UT Dallas.
