Faith, Horses and Transformation by: Brylie Myers

Chapel was held at Hunter Baseball Field at 9:30 a.m. on Oct 14, and featured guest speaker Dr. Lew Sterrett, who delivered a message while demonstrating the process of training a young horse. The event took place outdoors in place of the regular chapel service.

Sterrett, known for combining horsemanship with teaching, led a young horse into the field and began explaining each step of the training process. He described how he establishes communication, builds trust, corrects behavior and guides the horse toward cooperation. Throughout the demonstration, he spoke to the audience and connected his methods to broader life and spiritual concepts.

“I don’t punish my horses, I discipline them,” Sterrett said, emphasizing that his goal is not harm but development. He stated that he believes God interacts with people in a similar manner, using discipline to guide and shape rather than to condemn. This comparison served as a central point in his message.

Sterrett explained the difference between punishment and discipline, noting that punishment focuses on the past while discipline prepares for the future. As he worked with the horse, he demonstrated techniques such as establishing boundaries, using body language and applying pressure and release. He described how these actions help the horse understand expectations and build confidence in its trainer.

The demonstration lasted the duration of the chapel service. Students and staff observed both the physical training process and Sterrett’s explanations. He described how consistency, patience, and clear leadership are necessary in working with horses and related these principles to personal growth and faith.

Sterrett has conducted similar presentations in various settings and incorporates live animal training into his speaking engagements. His approach combines practical skills with message-based instruction.

The chapel service concluded with final remarks tying together the demonstration and the themes discussed. The event at Hunter Baseball Field offered an alternate format from traditional indoor services while maintaining the chapel’s scheduled time and purpose.
