From the moment he stepped onto the Hardin–Simmons University (HSU) campus, Colton Bosang knew he had found a place where he could grow both as a performer and as a person.
Bosang, a senior musical theatre major and honors minor from Waco, said what drew him to Hardin–Simmons was the sense of community he felt during his campus visit.
“During my tours I got a sense of community that I did not find anywhere else,” Bosang said. “Plus, the smaller class sizes made it feel like I could actually communicate with the professors and staff.”
Since arriving at HSU, Bosang has become deeply involved in the theatre program, performing in numerous productions and participating in College of Fine Arts (CAM) events. He said one of his favorite memories came during his freshman year.
“I got to take part in Western Heritage Day,” Bosang said. “I went out and did a bunch of skits with my friends in western clothing. I lost my voice badly, but it was worth it.”
HSU Professor of Music Lynnette Chambers is Bosang's voice teacher. She said Bosang’s dedication and work ethic make him stand out among her students.
“Colton auditioned for a summer program last year,” Chambers said. “He was accepted and spent the summer in New Hampshire. Truly a professional gig because he did get paid. A wonderful accomplishment in this area of study.”
Bosang said he's motivated by the constant support he receives from both his friends and the staff . “I have always had help whenever and wherever I need it, and it drives me to keep going," he said.
Bosang said James Spivey, HSU’s technical director, has had a major influence on him. “Not only is he one of the nicest people I have met, but he has also taught me things about the technical side of theatre that I can use after I graduate and that I really enjoy,” Bosang said. “He always has a huge workload but still makes time to help out students and be a positive force in the theatre.”
After graduation, Bosang plans to continue performing wherever opportunities take him. “I have got tons of options for where to go and have already had lots of experience doing theatre professionally, so I am going to continue on that path,” Bosang said.
As his time at Hardin–Simmons comes to an end, Bosang said his best advice for students is simple. “Enjoy college,” Bosang said. “It sounds cheesy, but four years go by so fast. There are so many opportunities to make friends, go out and enjoy your time here.”
