On Sept. 27, the Hardin-Simmons University (HSU) Cheerleading Team completed their fall service opportunity with the Abilene Youth Sports Association (AYSA). The event was held at AYSA’s new soccer facility, the Recreation Outdoor Complex, located near the Abilene Zoo.
The free festival ran from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with additional purchase requirements for the concert and 5K run. Free activities included games, sports, vendors and bounce houses. Some vendors included Espresso Oak, Lone Bull Snowcones, Essence of Soul Food and more.
The evening concert began at 6:30 p.m. and featured artists Christy Patton, Beltway Park Worship and The Young Escape. Raffle ticket winners were announced on Sept. 30 with sponsors including various local establishments. At 8:00 a.m., ROC N’ Run, a 5K walk/run hosted by FCA Sports, and the Abilene Running Company offered participants music, fellowship, T-shirts and medals.
HSU Cheer and managers were stationed throughout the event, assisting with bounce houses, the raffle table, concert ticket sales, field direction and crowd control. Wearing their HSU Cheer gear, the team contributed positive energy and enthusiasm to the day, which was made possible by the efforts of numerous volunteer groups.
The service opportunity allowed HSU Cheer to give back to the Abilene community. As a Christ-centered team, they seek to lead through example and service.
Brandon Osborne, AYSA executive director, explained AYSA’s mission, “We work with coaches, athletes and parents to re-shape youth sports. That means we are dedicated to changing the culture surrounding youth sports to provide a safe and encouraging atmosphere where kids can grow in their skills, character and confidence.”
Osborne emphasized the role of community support, “We are so thankful for our college students in Abilene because they are the next generation of Christian leaders in our world. We would love to partner with any students that need internship hours and volunteer if they love kids, Jesus and sports.”
HSU Cheer plans to continue working with AYSA, with another service project scheduled for spring 2026. To get involved with AYSA, contact info@abileneysa.org.
