The Hardin-Simmons University (HSU) Concert Band is bringing music lovers together for an unforgettable evening with its fall concert, “Sign Here.” The performance will take place on Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Van Ellis Theatre, and admission is free to the public.
Under the direction of Jay Lester, Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Music Education, the concert will feature 40 student musicians, performing a mix of brand-new compositions and well-known classics. This event marks the band’s major concert of the fall semester, following months of dedicated rehearsals that began in August.
The program, titled “Sign Here,” is inspired by the band’s connection to the composers of their featured works.
“We obtained autographs from most of the composers of the pieces on the program,” Lester said. “That’s where the title came from.”
The audience can expect a dynamic lineup of music, including four newly composed works that the HSU Concert Band will be among the first ensembles to perform. The program also includes familiar favourites, such as an arrangement of Superman and George Gershwin’s An American in Paris. One of the most unique moments of the night will feature a custom-built “car horn organ” created by a band member specifically for Gershwin’s piece.
For Lester, the concert is not just a showcase of talent but a reflection of growth and teamwork.
“I love to see the look on the students’ faces when we first read something challenging,” Lester said. “By the time of the performance, they’ve worked hard and gained a sense of accomplishment.”
Whether you’re a fan of classic band literature or curious to hear new and innovative compositions, “Sign Here” promises a night of energy, creativity, and community spirit.
