On Sept. 12, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Hardin-Simmons University hosted Serve Like Simmons. This semi-annual event is a way for the University to express its gratitude to the generous Abilene community.
The first 75 registered participants received a free T-shirt at check-in. Additionally, all participants received a free lunch at 1 p.m. in the Johnson Building and a chapel credit for their attendance.
This event honors the memory of Dr. James B. Simmons. Dr. Simmons’s concern for others is reflected in this day of service to the Abilene community. HSU wants to make a positive impact on Abilene by giving back and reflecting its Christian values of service.
Everyone is welcome to participate in the next Serve Like Simmons. Participants include HSU students, staff, faculty and Abilene community members. Everyone is able to come together for a common cause. This allows students to meet members of the community and build connections with professionals around Abilene.
Serve Like Simmons allows HSU students to make a difference in their community. It is centered around helping local nonprofits and in spreading the love of Christ beyond the HSU Campus. This year’s nonprofits included Salvation Army, the Food Bank of West Central Texas, Abilene Zoo, Love and Care Ministries and Disability Resources Inc. of Abilene. It is important to show Abilene that HSU cares about them as much as they care for the University.
Every volunteer has the opportunity to make a difference. There is a role for everyone to play, so do not hesitate to sign up for the next one. Serve Like Simmons is made successful through student volunteers that are willing to put in the time and effort to improve their community.
If you missed out on this service project, you can register for next semester’s projects. Another Serve Like Simmons will also be hosted in the spring semester. An email will be sent to all HSU students in the upcoming months, informing them about check-in times and dates, as well as a link to register. Make sure you are among the first to sign up to ensure receiving a free T-shirt.
