Thanksgiving break is approaching at Hardin-Simmons University (HSU), giving students several days away from classes. The break begins on Nov. 27 and arrives during a busy point in the semester as students prepare for final assignments and exams.
Campus groups often plan events in the weeks leading up to the holiday. Baptist Student Ministries and Student Activities usually host gatherings, meals and service opportunities that allow students to spend time together before leaving for the break.
Students who stay in Abilene during the holiday weekend spend their time in different ways. Many visit local places such as the Abilene Zoo, The Grace Museum, or coffee shops in the SODA District. Others stay on campus and use the quiet environment to study, rest, or meet with friends. Common spots include the HSU Lawn, Moody Center and study areas in the Richardson Library.
Residence Life keeps certain halls open for students who remain on campus. These students often treat the break as a chance to catch up on classwork, prepare for finals, or take a few slow days before the end of the semester. The campus becomes calm during this time, giving students space to reset.
Thanksgiving weekend also marks the beginning of several local traditions in Abilene. Downtown businesses begin putting up holiday decorations, and families throughout the city start preparing for the upcoming Christmas season. Students who stay in town often take part in these early celebrations.
Thanksgiving break provides students with an opportunity to pause and recharge before the final weeks of the semester. Whether students travel home or remain in Abilene, the break offers time for rest during a busy academic year.
