The Brand’s First Photography Contest By: Marlee Sorrells

The Brand is hosting its first photography contest for current students attending Hardin-Simmons University.

Students that want to participate should email their best picture of a glorious West Texas sunset to thebrandhsu@gmail.com using their HSU email by April 14 for a chance to receive a prize of $100 for first place, $75 for second place, $50 for third place and $25 for three honorable mentions. Each of the winners and honorable mentions’ photographs will be published in The Brand’s online website.

For the submission to be judged, the photo must be sent as a .jpeg file. Along with the picture, students must include their name, classification, major, hometown and where the photo was taken. The picture can be taken at any date, so even a photo five years ago will count as a viable submission.

The pictures will be judged by three local photographers, Caleb Dulock, head of the department of art and assistant professor of art at HSU, David Jones, a member of the West Texas Photographic Society, and Dr. Larry Fink, emeritus professor of English and professional photographer and also a member of the West Texas Photographic Society. The winners will be announced on April 21.

The photo contest was an idea given to our staff by The Brand’s faculty sponsors, Dr. Tim Chandler and Dr. Randy Armstrong. Their excitement about the creative potential of HSU students immediately led the staff to be excited about this as well.

“Because The HSU Brand is produced by current students, the photo contest is an exciting chance to give other students the opportunity to participate in a publication,” Emily Williamson, the editor-in-chief for The Brand and a senior criminal justice major from Amarillo, said. “HSU has so many talented students, and I have no doubt that this contest will give our Cowboys a chance to shine.”

An example submission would be:

Subject: Sunset Photo Contest

Name: Marlee Sorrells

Classification: Freshman

Major: Communication Sciences and Disorders
