Hardin-Simmons is home to many clubs and organizations that reflect the student body's wide range of interests.
There is something for everyone, including service-based organizations, Baptist Student Ministries (BSM), Greek Life, book clubs to name just a few. One such club is Cowboy Country (CC).
CC is HSU’s country swing dance club, which was founded in October of 2022 by current president Madison Neal, senior agribusiness major and biology minor from Plano. Neal started dancing at 8 years old and learned country swing from her father when she was 13.
When she enrolled in HSU and learned that there was not a country swing club on campus, she was surprised. Between navigating college and personal life, Neal decided that if there was not one, she would start one.
“I wanted to achieve active communication through dancing and maintaining friendships through a club setting,” Neal said.
CC is open to anyone, and no prior dance experience is required. However, only current HSU students are allowed to become members. They meet every Tuesday and Thursday, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the upstairs dance studio of Mabee Athletic Complex.
Practices consist of teaching new moves, reviewing past moves, line dances and more. Members also perform at several school events throughout the year, such as Sing!, tailgates and basketball halftime among others
“I joined Cowboy Country on a whim, thinking it would be something to try once and then never do it again. I ended up having a good time and eventually started to love country dancing. I’ve learned all kinds of moves, from lifts to dips, and have learned how to relax while dancing.” Brett Briggeman, co-president, sophomore Christian studies/history major, honors/worship leadership minor from Fort Worth, said. “I’ve really enjoyed being part of this club and am thankful for the community friends that have come from it. I highly recommend that anyone who’s interested in the club come and try it at least once, and I can almost guarantee that you’ll have a good time and maybe even make some new friends.”
If you are interested in learning more, you can follow them on their Instagram: hsucowboy_country, scan the QR on the posters hung around campus to join the interest GroupMe, or visit a practice; they would love to meet you.
