Cowgirls Softball Focuses on Growth and Consistency by: Aniekeme Andy

Hardin-Simmons University softball is heading into the 2026 season with a focus on steady growth, teamwork and consistent effort as the Cowgirls prepare for another year in the American Southwest Conference (ASC).

Last season, Hardin-Simmons finished with a 26-14 record overall and 14-10 in conference play, showing improvement and promise as the program continues to grow under new leadership.

This year, the Cowgirls will be led by head coach Casey Wilson, who took over the program last season. Wilson brings experience and a steady presence as the team looks to build on last year’s success.

The Cowgirls return a mix of experienced players and younger athletes stepping into bigger roles, and that balance has shaped the team's identity built around effort and learning. Practices have been centered on getting the little things right — making plays in the field, communicating on defense and being aggressive at the plate.

Defensively, HSU has focused on communication and reliability. Players have worked on clean infield play and knowing their responsibilities in the outfield, understanding that consistency can make the difference in close games.

On offense, the Cowgirls aim to create scoring opportunities through smart at-bats and smart baserunning. Rather than relying only on big hits, the team has emphasized putting the ball in play and advancing runners whenever possible.

Depth has also been a point of emphasis. With several players able to contribute to different roles, the Cowgirls have flexibility in their lineup and defense — something that can be valuable during a long season when energy and health matter.

Pitching remains a central part of the team’s approach. Coaches and players alike have stressed consistency in the circle and limiting walks. Understanding that controlling the pace of the game gives the defense a better chance to make plays.

Beyond the stat lines, team culture has been a priority. Practices stress preparation, communication and supporting one another, creating an environment where players can grow together throughout the season.

With a focus on effort and consistency, Hardin-Simmons softball is ready to take steps forward and compete every day.
