The Jazz Spring Concert, led by the Hardin-Simmons University (HSU) Jazz Ensemble, is right around the corner. The event will be held in Van-Ellis Theatre on April 20 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and will showcase the hard work and prowess of the students who are part of the Jazz Ensemble.
Dr. Jeffery Cottrell is currently serving as an adjunct professor for the department of music, directing the Jazz Ensemble at HSU, as well as teaching low brass lessons for music students. Dr. Cottrell’s favorite responsibility revolves around the students and their enjoyment of playing their music.
“I love it when the students enjoy the music they have prepared and are excited to play it,” Dr. Cottrell said. “My favorite part of preparing for this concert in particular is having everything work correctly in rehearsal.”
Dr. Cottrell also mentioned how some of the music that will be played is classified as being relatively new within the jazz world.
“All but one piece is fairly new in historical terms, having all been composed in the last 25 years.” Dr. Cottrell said. “So, people can expect to hear great jazz they may have never heard before. When choosing songs for the concert, some were suggested by students, and some we voted on. Others I picked to fit the theme of modern jazz and to have variety. The last two pieces are inspirational and will feature vocals from a couple of our Worship Leadership majors. The final one may get people on their feet singing along.”
Be sure to come out and support our HSU Jazz Ensemble as they host their spring concert. The event is free of charge and students are encouraged to come and listen to some good music and get to witness what the jazz students have been working on this semester.
