Introduced in 2004, the official HSU ring is a more recent addition, but certainly a significant milestone in the seniors’ final year nonetheless.
These rings are adorned with familiar and well-loved icons that are hallmarks of the University, including the bell on Anderson Lawn, Logsdon’s stained glass window and the University seal.
Phrases such as “Famous are Thy Halls,” which was taken from the Hardin-Simmons University anthem written by former student Jesse Hodges, and “An Education Enlightened by Faith,” which can be traced to the mission statement of the University, are engraved on the ring as well.
These tokens of the time spent on campus are a gift to the students and are free of charge. Although a young tradition compared to some, it does as all traditions should, connect people. The senior ring not only connects the upcoming alumni to their graduating class and their experiences together, but it also unites them with every other student who has taken part in the ceremony. It provides a community of former students to an even larger family.
The Spring Ring Ceremony recognizes all students who will be graduating in May and August. This ceremony is free for all graduates, their families and friends; however, there is limited space, so students will need to request additional seats if the guests exceed three. The ceremony will include a unique set of traditions, such as the presentation of the rings by President Eric I. Bruntmeyer, the ringing of the ceremonial bell and soon-to-be graduates signing their names in the HSU ring book.
“The ring represents the individual graduate’s personal accomplishments in graduating from HSU. The Official Ring also symbolizes Hardin-Simmons University with its traditions and great history,” Laurie Harris, assistant director of Alumni Engagement, said. “The Official Ring celebrates a new tradition and the unique graduation experience of each graduate. It is a reminder of the Hardin-Simmons experience that will remain a part of their lives forever.”
The ceremonies will be held in Logsdon Chapel on April 11. The first ceremony will be at 12:00 p.m., the second at 3:00 p.m. and the third will begin at 6:00 p.m. Congratulations, graduates. We are honored to celebrate with you.
