Staff Spotlight: Roger Jackson by: Brett Briggeman

Hardin-Simmons University has hired a new Baptist Student Ministry (BSM) director.

Roger Jackson is from Abilene, graduated from Wylie High School and has spent time in ministry, the military and the business world. He likes basketball, golf and spending time with family. Jackson has been married to his wife Crystal Jackson, a worship leader at Connect Church, for 18 years. They have four children.

“I am all about discipleship,” Jackson said. “I want to help reclaim discipleship in the American church, to help give more of a game plan for it.”

Jackson is also the creator of a nonprofit Christian organization known as After Salvation.  It is a five-week discipleship plan with daily readings along with questions for each day that assist new or maturing believers. It was created to give any Christian, no matter the maturity level, a strong foundation and clear next steps in their faith.

“After Salvation was created for the visible need in the area of discipleship,” Jackson said. “It is not just a hobby or nonprofit for me, but it is one of my biggest passions.”

Jackson emphasizes understanding the calling God placed on his life for ministry as one of the main reasons why he is excited for his time at Hardin-Simmons.

“Understanding my calling and my heartbeat for making disciples is one of the main reasons why I wanted to come to HSU,” Jackson said. “I want to help those here to grow in their abilities, spiritually and otherwise, and to help them also make disciples. The BSM is a great platform to grow and equip the body of Christ.”

Jackson wants the BSM to be a disciple-making movement and see revival across HSU, in every department and every unreached area on campus.

“I want to be building ministry leaders, workplace evangelists, making ambassadors for Christ in every field and making sure that they are competent and confident in Christ,” Jackson said. “The BSM is not a replacement for church, but we still want to focus on shepherding students and investing in them.”

“I am excited to be here and it is an honor to lock arms with some of the leaders in the HSU faculty and staff that genuinely love students and you can see it through their actions,” Jackson said. “It is great to be part of an organization that is centered in Christ.”
